Tropical Modernism

The Space

A 6,500 sq ft four-bedroom villa in Hyderabad, inspired by Geoffrey Bawa’s Tropical Modernism. Bathed in natural light from east- and south-facing windows, the home connects effortlessly with its surroundings—framing views of the historic Golconda Fort and the city’s twinkling nightscape. Whitewashed walls, locally sourced natural stone, and restored wooden furniture from across India create a serene, timeless atmosphere. The design celebrates climate, culture, and craft, with open courtyards, fluid spaces, and a material palette rooted in sustainability.

The Ask

Our client, deeply passionate about Hyderabad’s heritage and climate-conscious living, envisioned a home that would capture both the spirit of the city and the rhythm of nature. The brief called for a modern yet traditional villa—comfortable, functional, and ecologically responsible. The design needed to integrate passive cooling systems, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy, all while ensuring a warm, inviting home that could cocoon its residents while embracing the outdoors.

The Result

We crafted a home where architecture, environment, and tradition exist in perfect harmony. Strategic splashes of colour enliven a neutral base, while open courtyards invite cross-ventilation and seasonal change into the living experience. Locally sourced Kadapa, Tandoor, and marble floors ground the home in its regional identity. Antique and distressed furniture—restored on site—infuse every corner with history and soul. The villa’s elevated design captures sweeping views of Hyderabad’s heritage, while its thoughtful detailing makes everyday life feel like a retreat. The result is a home that feels instinctively right—rooted in place, alive with light, and deeply connected to both people and planet.
